The Carolina Hurricanes long held the favorite role, but the New York Rangers knocked them out in the second round with a Game 6 victory on Thursday. The Rangers await the winner of the Florida Panthers - Boston Bruins series that heads to its sixth game on Friday.
Both Western Conference showdowns have teams now looking to stave off elimination. The Dallas Stars hold a 3-2 edge over the Colorado Avalanche but failed to eliminate the Avs in their first attempt on Wednesday night; they get another crack on Friday. With a victory on Thursday, the Vancouver Canucks grabbed a series lead over the Edmonton Oilers. The first elimination game for the Western Canadian rivalry comes on Saturday.

2024 Stanley Cup favorites
Panthers (+310 via bet365)
The Panthers are squarely in control of their second-round series against the Bruins after taking a controversy-filled Game 4 by a 3-2 to sweep two games in Boston. The victory gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead in the series and had them firmly in the driver's seat to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Florida failed to knock off the Bruins at home in Game 5, falling 2-1 as the series shifts back to Boston on Friday. The Bruins have never rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to advance, so the Panthers are still likely to get out of the series.
Stars (+300 via bet365)
The Stars have been all over the oddsboard since the postseason began. They opened the postseason at +900, quickly found themselves down 2-0 to the Vegas Golden Knights and plummeted, however, Dallas rallied on the road and turned the tides on the series.
Dallas plummeted again to start the second round, dropping their opener to the Avalanche. They surged to the top of the oddsboard heading into Wednesday's game with the Avs, but a disastrous third period saw them fall 5-2 as Colorado staved off elimination.
Rangers (+320 via DraftKings)
The Rangers had vaulted to the top of the oddsboard by opening the second round with three straight victories over the Hurricanes but slipped behind Florida and Dallas when they struggled to complete the sweep or even get past Carolina in Game 5.
New York became the first team to advance to a conference final by finally sealing the deal in Game 6, and it now awaits the winner of Florida vs. Boston to find out which opponent will next have to deal with its physical game and adept offense.
